Since we could all use a little cheering up, News Hits wants to shout a big ol’ hallelujah over last week’s announcement by the Big 2 1/2 — namely Ford, GM and DaimlerChrysler — that they are ready to support development of a “high-quality, comprehensive regional public transportation system for Southeast Michigan. An effective regional transportation system is important in connecting workers with jobs, serving a rapidly aging population and in reducing traffic congestion, which has a positive effect on the environment.”
The good folks at MOSES — an interfaith coalition of 70 congregations that has been pushing for sane transit policy in this region — lauded the news as a major step forward.
“Forces are converging throughout metropolitan Detroit,” responded the Rev. Stephen Jones, pastor of First Baptist Church of Birmingham. “This train is leaving the station. The people in our pews and on the streets are demanding it.”
Amen to that.
