Riveting arts — This column doesn’t usually spill much ink in the direction of the arts, but we’re willing to make an exception for something as worthy as the 8th annual Detroit Worker Writer and Artist Festival taking place Saturday, May 7. What caught our attention was a flier for the event, which declares: “The Radical Right doesn’t have a monopoly on ‘moral values.’ Join us for what promises to be an entertaining evening of workers responding to the right’s onslaught with original poetry, short stories, skits, songs, rap, essays, dance and visual arts.” Right on, brothers and sisters. The event takes place 7-9:30 p.m. at the UAW, Region 1A, 9650 S. Telegraph, Taylor. Admission is free, but a hat will be passed. The Wobbly Kitchen will provide refreshments. Eat this film — The Michigan Organic Food & Farm Alliance is hosting two free screenings of the documentary The Future of Food. The film explores issues involving genetically modified foods, which the U.S. government says are “generally recognized as safe.” And we all know how much our government can be trusted, right? Along with looking at issues ranging from antibiotic resistance to the effect these crops have on farmers. The first screening will take place Sunday, May 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at 23550 Harper Ave. in St. Clair Shores.
