Winging it — How many conferences offer the opportunity to meet a live red-tailed hawk? Damn few that we know of. There is at least one, however, and it’s coming up on Saturday, April 2. Given the hawk angle, it should come as no surprise that the get-together is being put on by the folks over at the Detroit Audubon Society. The conference has an early-bird starting time of 7 a.m., when participants will take part in the first official birding field trip to be conducted at the new Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge downriver at Humbug Marsh. The conference moves indoors to the Grosse Ile Middle School at 9 a.m. There will be fun stuff, like live folk music, and practical seminars, such as those teaching participants how to effectively lobby state and federal legislators. There will also be a special “youth-in-action” forum. Lunch is included. Cost is $18 for adults and $7 per child the day of the event (slightly lower if purchased in advance). Call 248-545-2929.
Capitalist tools — A series of seminars is being held in Oakland County to assist business owners and entrepreneurs. The first, from 8:45 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 6, will focus on the ins and outs of obtaining small-business loans. Cost is $20. Future sessions include “How to start a business” and “How to write a business plan.” All workshops are being offered by the Oakland County Office of Planning & Economic Development Services.
