DON’T READ THIS! The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, along with the Detroit Public Library, will host a “Banned Book Celebrity Read-In” at the main branch Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 6 pm.
“The goal is to increase awareness that there should not be censorship on what people read,” says Wendy Wagenheim, communications director for the Michigan ACLU.
Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley will read from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Detroit News columnist Laura Berman will read from A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. Other readings will be announced the day of the event.

Flick pick The documentary Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land: U.S. Media and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at the Swords Into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, 33 E. Adams in Detroit. The flick offers a look into the way media shape America’s perceptions about the conflict in the Middle East. It’s a good bet you won’t find the film on the B’nai B’rith’s 10-best list.
