Penguin props

Metro Times readers may not know who Dan Perkins is, but they are certainly familiar with his work. Under the alias Tom Tomorrow, Perkins inks the “This Modern World” cartoon that appears in this and other alternative newspapers each week.

We wanted to give a hearty congrats to Dan, who is one of 16 people to receive the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, known in newspaper circles as the “poor people’s Pulitzer” because of its emphasis on recognizing work that focuses attention on the plight of the needy.

Judges said Perkins’ strip “showcases multilayered satirical commentary on economic inequality in the United States, as well as the inaction of the politicians who have the power to change it. Perkins’ body of work also addresses subjects such as access to health care and the gradual erosion of civil liberties in today’s post-9/11 world.”

News Hits was unable to reach Perkins, who previously won the RFK award in 1998. But we did get in touch with his penguin pal Sparky, who informed us, “This is great. Maybe this time I’ll finally get a raise. Or at least some clothes.”
