As the Bush administration continues to stoke the fires of war, at least a few Americans are growing red-assed, white-knuckled and blue in the face about the effects a never-ending battle against terrorism will have on our country. While some may fear that anti-war views will be patriotically pooh-poohed if voiced, Tom Ness is not among them. A local Green Party activist, Ness and other metro-area lefties are planning an anti-war march and rally for Tuesday, March 12. The march will begin at Swords Into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery at 33 E. Adams in downtown Detroit. A rally and concert at St. Andrew’s Hall, 431 E. Congress, will follow at 6 p.m. With Marcus Lee as master of ceremonies, the evening will feature local musicians and poets. Among those slated to speak is writer, filmmaker and hell-raiser Michael Moore. The event is a fundraiser for the Afghan Women’s Mission and the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan and local humanitarian charities. Also on the peace front, Women in Black, a Detroit group that opposes the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan and Iraq and opposes Israel’s occupation of Palestine, will hold a silent protest Saturday, March 9, at noon. The Detroit group is inspired by the Israeli women who protested their country’s occupation of Palestine with a silent protest in 1988.
