Breaking News: nothing major went down during Detroit’s 60th annual Ford fireworks show last night, MLive reports. Only in Detroit would this be considered a newsworthy headline.
A few arrests and ejections were made near Hart Plaza during the festivities, but there were no other major reports of violence. There had been a string of incidents in past years, notably that a woman was shot in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue in 2017.
A strategic law enforcement strategy was deployed at this year’s celebration. This ramped-up, militarized presence included mounted officers, armored vehicles, mobile guard towers, and barriers installed in key high traffic zones, specifically near the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Curfews were also enforced for minors who were on the streets unaccompanied after 8 p.m.
Two planes each waving the U.S. and Canada flags flew above the Detroit-Windsor border to kick-off the evening, because #SquadGoals. And last night, thousands of metro Detroiters gathered along the riverfront to gaze up at the 25-minute pyrotechnic spectacle, with barbecue pits a-blazin’ and the little kiddos’ screams of joy (and terror), as colorful, mini-explosives blasted into the sky.
