Come on, folks, being hungry is no fuckin’ fun. While most of us are just surfing along on a supposedly great economy, the problem of hunger in this country continues to get worse. Actively working to make a difference, the Empty Bowls Project marks its 10th year of calling our attention to this growing calamity with an exhibition, Sept. 8-Oct. 24, at the Swords into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, 33 E. Adams, Detroit. Featured are bowls created by amateur, student and professional artists (some decorated by such “Heroes for Social Justice” as Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Sen. Carl Levin, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and Councilwoman Maryann Mahaffey, among many others) which will be auctioned off silently during the run of the show. Attend the opening reception, 5:30-9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8 and/or the Empty Bowls meal, 5-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13. At the latter, you can “pay what you can, if you can” for a meal and a bowl, with all proceeds funneled into the ongoing fight against that horrible empty feeling that more Americans are having than we want to realize.
