26 years ago in Metro Times: Bill Rowe delves into heavy metal with part two of his Night of the Living Headbangers. "The superior attitude and posturing ... is essentially the same as the man who cracks sexist jokes and sexually harasses the women in his office. These men revel in their ability to control, humiliate, and degrade women," Carol King of the National Organization of Women tells Rowe. An arbitrary metal discography lists such greats as Motörhead's No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith and a young Metallica's Kill 'Em All and LPs by such androgynous glamsters as Mötley Crüe and Twisted Sister. An odd idea that the men who dress like women, don't know how to treat women. What was happening: Cyndi Lauper at Grand Circus Theatre, Lou Rawls at the Premier Center, and Mötley Crüe at the Fox Theatre.
15 years ago in Metro Times: Leah Samuel looks at the infighting that preceded the 1995 newspaper strike. With an important April 30 deadline approaching, the only group that had reached an agreement was the machinists union. Carriers, who were viewed as nonunion independent contractors, represented a split in the workforce. Six unions representing 2,500 employees would end up going on strike on July 13, 1995, and wouldn't begin to return until Feb. 17, 1997. Last year, the Freep and News were among the first U.S. papers to cut home delivery. What was happening: The fourth annual Motor City Music Awards (now the DMAs) took place at the State Theater, headlined by none other than Ted Nugent, who also received the Special Achievement Award.
Six years ago in Metro Times: Lisa M. Collins profiles one of Detroit's best artists: Glenn Barr. Barr's psychedelic mash-ups blend post-apocalyptic war-torn fantasies with vintage backdrops in beautifully contrasting visuals — in multiple mediums, including art canvases, television (Nickelodeon's Ren & Stimpy), comics (working with DC and Marvel) and magazines (CREEM, Orbit and Fun Magazine). Just last October, Royal Oak's 323 Gallery featured some of Barr's latest works. Despite his growing, coast-to-coast recognition, Barr can't seem to get away from Detroit, buying studio space in the Russell Industrial Center in 2008. Also in MT Jack Lessenberry hits us with the nugget of wisdom: "(George W.) Bush is probably not bright enouogh t be President." What was happening: It was all about Brits and midgets, with Muse at the Shelter, the Fall at the Majestic and Mini-Kiss at the Palace.
