Mama’s man

One of our readers passed on a Mother’s Day greeting state Rep. LeMar Lemmons sent to about 500 women in his district. Mailed on the state’s tab, Lemmons’ certificate of appreciation covered any woman who’s a “Wife, Mother, Grand Mother, Step Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Big Mama, Play Mama, Bread Winner, Friend, Neighbor and over all a very Special Lady.”

To all those gals, wrote Lemmons, “You Keep the Skies from Falling.”

Our question was “What’s a play mama?”

Lemmons told the white breads here at News Hits that it’s an African-American term used to describe the sort of women who take it upon themselves to nurture whole communities.

What the procrastinators here at Hits found particularly reassuring was Lemmons’ confession that the sentiment was delivered one year late.

“We were supposed to send these out last year,” admitted Lemmons. “But we didn’t get it together in time.”
