If you haven't been outside lately, don't. Don't do it. It's frickin' freezing.
So freezing, in fact, that most of the Great Lakes are nearly 22 percent covered in ice. For perspective, this time last year the lakes were only about 3 percent covered in ice, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And if trends continue, this winter could be icier than usual, and could surpass the great Polar Vortex winter of 2013-14, which saw the Great Lakes nearly 100 percent covered in ice.
The severe ice has been causing a host of problems, from delayed shipping to flood warnings in St. Clair and Macomb counties.
The silver lining to this deep freeze is that increased ice coverage tends to act as a cap of sorts, leading to less lake effect snow. So hey. There's that.
The deep freeze in metro Detroit is expected to continue for a couple of more days. Sunday is expected to be a (relative) balmy 27 degrees.
