In case of war: Break

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. That axiom is being employed by area peace groups as the invasion of Iraq appears more and more likely. And we’re not talking about stocking up on duct tape.

Here’s the plan for Attack Day: Should news of the invasion break before noon Detroit time, peace advocates plan to gather from 4-6 p.m. at the Detroit Naval Armory located at 7600 E. Jefferson Ave., just east of the MacArthur Bridge. If the attack starts after noon, a demonstration will be held at the same time and place the following day. For more information about anti-war activities, phone Michigan Peace Action at 248-548-3920.

In Ann Arbor, the plan is to hold a peace march and candlelight vigil beginning at 6 p.m. the day the war begins. Protesters will gather near the Federal Building at Fifth Avenue and Liberty Street. For more information about this and other events visit the Web site at

Finally, in the hope that prayer will succeed where reason seems to have failed, an interfaith rally is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile, east of Telegraph. For more information, see this week’s Screed. The flier announcing this event is marked “urgent.”

Talk about understatement.
