Detroit's status as a "Top Ten city" and the Metro Times' potential for growth attracted Chris Sexson to MT's Greektown neighborhood. The new publisher — replacing Lisa Rudy, who recently stepped down — will be here full time by mid-June.
"I think there's huge potential in your city and more people are going to see that," says Sexson, 37.
A native of Ohio, Sexson's career in alternative publications began while he was a Sinclair Community College student and worked as a sales representative for the Dayton Voice, now the Dayton City Paper. Over time, he advanced to advertising director and set sales records for several years.
In 2003, he joined Times-Shamrock Communications, the Metro Times parent company, and moved to San Antonio as advertising director. Two years later he became publisher of the San Antonio Current.
Why would he leave the warm climate for Michigan winters?
"I'm not a Texan, you know what I mean?" he told us.
He is, however, a devoted fan of alternative publications.
"I truly find my sense of purpose working in the alt media." Sexson says. "You're part of a great good, creating the dialogue that moves the community forward. We don't always have the answers, but we try and pose the questions no one else is asking."
