After a whirlwind week of emotional public viewings (and outfit changes, respectively) at the Charles H. Wright Museum, a luminous tribute concert at Chene Park last night, Aretha Franklin will be celebrated with a six and a half hour homegoing service at the Greater Grace Temple in Detroit and the guest list, as previously reported, is nothing less than epic.
The service, which is meticulously scheduled down to the minute, begins at 9:30 a.m. with a musical prelude featuring the Aretha Franklin Orchestra followed by an hour of prayer and readings. The first musical tribute will come from Faith Hill at 10:45 a.m. which will introduce a series of remarks by Detroit city council president Brenda Jones, Mayor Mike Duggan, and Gov. Rick Snyder. Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, and Fantasia Barrino-Taylor will also perform. Speakers will also include former president Bill Clinton, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Tyler Perry.
Stevie Wonder will close out the musical tribute portion of the service at 2:35 p.m. and will be joined by other artists. The recessional will be scored by Jennifer Holliday and the Aretha Franklin Celebration Choir before Franklin makes her final journey to Woodlawn Cemetary.
The service can be live-streamed by visiting the Greater Grace Temple website here.
