Help for the uninsured

In most developed countries, there’s no need for something like “Cover the Uninsured Week,” which begins on Monday, March 23. But until the day comes that this country recognizes access to health care is a right and not a privilege, then events such as the free health expo being held at Cobo Center will continue to be not just necessary, but vital.

OK, enough of the editorializing and on to the pertinent info.

Monday’s event at Cobo’s Riverview Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. will feature free and low-cost health screenings for vision, hearing, hypertension, cholesterol, HIV/AIDs testing and more. There will also be, among other things, health insurance eligibility screening and enrollment options for children, adults and small-business owners, and health services and information from area health providers, including mental health.

Parking (on the Cobo roof deck) is free and refreshments will be served. For more information about Cover the Uninsured Week events and activities, call 313-874-1677, have a look at, or go to and click “Learn About Your State,” and select “Michigan.”
