If Detroit was once the Paris of the Midwest, then 4100 Third St. is that rare abandoned structure that’s retained its Old World charm. The single-story building, once a bustling food stamp office, at the corner of Alexandrine in the heart of the Cass Corridor, features side entrances protected by gratings with floral twists and graffiti scrawled in permanent ink on the front door. Stalk-like weeds grow from the building’s western face, nearly to the height of the roof.
Not surprisingly, no one wants to claim ownership of the building. The city’s lack of updated taxpayer information doesn’t help. An attempt to track down the recipient of a two-year-old postal slip found at the site revealed only that the man has since left the state.
