Just to keep things in perspective, we’d like to remind our readers that there are a lot of people dying to get into this country. Many of them can be found in detention cells right here in Detroit. According to the group Freedom House, which assists immigrants seeking asylum, the situation has grown increasingly desperate since the passage of new immigration laws in 1996. “Men, women and children who come to the United States seeking freedom from religious, political, social or ethnic persecution have been subject to immediate return to their countries or imprisonment during the process of seeking asylum.”

On Tuesday, Nov. 21, Freedom House will be holding a “vigil for justice” from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for these people at the Newman Chapel on the campus of Wayne State University. For more information, phone David Koelsch at 313-964-4320.
