Fates of the planet, Dems

Jonathan Schell wrote The Fate of the Earth in 1982 to drive home the prospects of nuclear holocaust and, as one reviewer put it, to "slap us to our senses." His recent A Gift of Time argues that the post-Cold War chance to avert that fate is being squandered. Schell is to discuss the book in the annual Cranbrook Peace Foundation lecture Thursday, Oct. 29, at 9:30 p.m. at the Troy Marriott, Big Beaver between Livernois and I-75. Call 313-563-4014 for ticket information.

Meanwhile, the fate of the Democratic Party in Michigan will be the topic Sunday as the Center for New Thinking's monthly "Sunday Alternative" program kicks off with the topic "Fieger and Clinton: The Future of the Democratic Party." Weighing in at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Kingsley Inn in Bloomfield Hills will be Metro Times contributing editor Jack Lessenberry, the center's leader Sherwin Wine and Doug Ross, one of Fieger's primary election opponents. For information, call 248-338-0105.
