'Exit Through The Gift Shop' will screen at Royal Oak's Main Art

As the saga with Banksy and Detroit continues to develop four years after the internationally-acclaimed and mysterious street artist tagged Detroit, we thought it worth pointing out that the excellent Exit Through the Gift Shop is the Midnight Movie at the Royal Oak Main Art this week.

More than a mere street art doc, Exit Through the Gift Shop chronicles how Banksy accidentally made an art star out of Thierry Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash, a street art fanboy-turned-failed film director. Like Banksy's own work, the film brings up questions about authenticity and authorship. Is Exit Through the Gift Shop a doc or a hoax? Consider the tagline "A Banksy film" to be an asterisk.

The film screening kicks off an exhibition of drawings and paintings of the L.A.-based street artist "Ouzie" Louise Chen, which has an opening reception at the Main Art the next week on Saturday, June 14, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A short film, "Creation of the World," will be screened at 6:30 p.m.

You may know of Chen's art from around Detroit — she drew a chalkboard mural at Astro Coffee in Detroit, and her signature flowers decorate a wall in Eastern Market.
