Earth to Nolan

Usually Detroit News editorial page honcho and columnist Nolan Finley just irritates us with his Neanderthal mentality. But a column last week, decrying the way the liberal press has been beating up on the lovable Mitt "Mittens" Romney, had us wondering exactly what alternate universe the Nol-man is inhabiting these days.

What really grabbed our attention was Finley's claim that "Obama has been allowed to craft a self-portrait free from critical challenge."

Which is absolutely true — if you discount the nonstop tsunami of vitriol that has been heaped on the prez by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and an uncounted number of their right-wing clones clogging the radio airwaves, as well as the entire Fox network. (And the most casual reader of left-leaning outlets will know that there's something less than a love fest for a prez deemed insufficiently progressive on a range of issues.)

Other than that, Null, you are absolutely right, as usual.

Desperate to bolster his case that Mitty is getting unfair treatment, Finley pointed to a recent Washington Post story about Romney assaulting a (presumably) gay classmate while an 18-year-old senior at the exclusive Cranbrook Academy.

A recent inductee to the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame, Finley characterized that story as being  "vaguely documented."

Which is also absolutely true, if you consider firsthand accounts from five of the other people involved — only one of whom asked to remain anonymous — as "vague."

To bad for Nolly that he isn't even vaguely tethered to reality. Keep up the good work, guy.
