Detroit drops out of America's top 20 biggest cities

According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau, Detroit's population is at its lowest since 1850.

Between the summer of 2014 to the summer of 2015, the Detroit population decreased by 3,107 people — the smallest amount in long time. Despite slower rate of exodus, the change was enough to push Detroit out of the top 20 most populated cities, with Denver, Seattle, and El Paso now passing Detroit.

As the The Detroit News reports, 1850 was the last census year when Detroit was not in the top 20, and it was then the 30th-largest city.

In contrast, Detroit was the fourth-largest city — only behind New York, Chicago and Philadelphia — in 1940.
