The weatherbeaten American flag hanging limply from the flagpole beside 1300 18th Street bears testament to the home’s present state of duress. Built in 1885, the careful woodwork and scalloped trim suggest the large colonial might have once been quite a looker — a vision in cream with delicate accents of pale blue and mauve. Today, though, the windows are boarded up and a walk around back reveals the violent ruins of a fire that broke out in late May. “The house is a good house,” says a neighbor, noting that the two structures across the street were built in 2000 to replicate the colonial’s quaint features.
