Backslaps

Fresh off the self-congratulatory overload of last week’s Big-Ass Anniversary Issue, News Hits is almost embarrassed to say more good things about this rag. But, say them we must. So, here’s a shout-out to the folks who recently scooped up awards from the Michigan Press Association.

Competing against the state’s largest weekly papers, MT Culture Editor Sarah Klein took first place in the feature story category for her piece, “Building the better vagina.” Judges described it as a “gutsy story handled with grace and sensitivity.”

Also receiving first-place honors was former staff writer Ann Mullen, whose news story “Lessons in denial” was, according to judges, a “fascinating tale” about a school system that failed to stop a teacher from molesting his students.

News Editor Curt Guyette took two third-place awards, one for spot news and the other for a story about problems associated with using the Heimlich maneuver on drowning victims.
