Here’s good news for journalism in Detroit. Next week, Metro Times returns to full staffing with the arrival of our new editor, Jeremy Voas, an award-winning veteran whose experience ranges from metro dailies to alternative weeklies in Arizona and California.
“Jeremy is an incredible editor with a phenomenal news background and a strong commitment to providing the straight story when it comes to music, arts and cultural coverage,” Metro Times publisher David Jost said last week, in announcing the Voas hiring.
Voas was most recently editor in chief and lead columnist of Phoenix New Times, the flagship of the New Times group of alternative papers.
While at Phoenix New Times, Voas’ writers grabbed seven consecutive journalist of the year awards for the state of Arizona, not to mention the state’s top investigative reporting prize for five consecutive years. A 1998 project conceived and edited by Voas won the coveted Paul L. Myhre Award from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
“I’m psyched about coming up there,” Voas said, in reference to both Metro Times and metro Detroit. “Detroit is a dynamic and fertile news city. Its cultural history is rich. Its music scene has always been on the vanguard. I aim to have fun.”
So does the editorial staff here. We know our readers will too.
