Paintings by Detroiter Tom Thewes nod at cubo-futurists and German Expressionists of the early 20th century yet occasionally point to the modern day, as in the ballooning boom box he was commissioned to create for the original Detroit Electronic Music Festival. And this show, Rigid, is a collection of past and present work, representing Thewes’ first solo exhibition since 1997.

Rigid will showcase more than 50 pieces, representing 20-plus years in art, including personal work as well as illustrations commissioned by clients that really run the gamut — from the New York Rangers to Vice magazine.

Rigid opens with a reception from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, and runs through Nov. 4.
