The DIA just got big bucks to show hot stuff this year. The institution just heard word they're included as one of a handful of organizations across the Midwest to receive a $50,000 award from the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation. The money supports the museum's upcoming installation by Ethiopian-born visual artist Julie Mehretu, a big-timer in the international arts scene who's known for site-specific biographical narratives drawn in grids and maps. It may sound abstract, but trust us here that Mehretu is sure to present one of the best art shows in Detroit this year.
The Joyce Awards support cultural organizations that commission works by artists of color throughout the Midwest. Awards this year went to Chicago's Joffrey Ballet in partnership with Luna Negra Dance Theater for Cuban choreographer Pedro Ruiz's new ballet, and to the Minneapolis-based Guthrie Theater, for the commission of a new play by African-American and Korean playwright Jerome Hairston. But another special shout-out goes to Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, which also received funding to offset costs associated with a new sculpture and exhibition honoring the 20th anniversary of Tyree Guyton's Heidelberg Project.
