Playwright and Detroit native Neil LaBute has been praised for his way with dialogue and his efforts to expose the dark side of love and gender affairs. Having won critical acclaim for his 1997 film, In the Company of Men, LaBute came out last year with The Shape of Things, a film based on his play of the same title, starring Rachel Weisz and Paul Rudd. Now Planet Ant Theatre is taking on the writer/director’s play. The show runs Oct. 28-Nov. 28 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10-$15. This Thursday (Oct. 28) Cranbrook is hosting a panel discussion to explore the African diaspora. The talk coincides with the museum’s current exhibit, Looking Both Ways: Art of the Contemporary African Diaspora. New York artists Ghada Amer and Wangechi Mutu will lead the discussion with people such as Dr. Anan Ameri, director of the Arab-American National Museum. The talk takes place at 7 p.m. in Cranbrook’s deSalle Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 students and seniors. The Roseville Theatre is hosting a Horror and Gore Film Festival this Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 31, featuring screenings of Ichi the Killer, Flesh for the Beast and Death Bed.
