All clichés aside, art is truly the essence of life — and now, both artists and art connoisseurs have the chance to possibly save a few lives through their passion. The 9th annual Artworks for Life auction features the work of more than 300 (mostly local) artists, and all proceeds go to the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project. One of Michigan’s largest nonprofit organizations, MAPP is dedicated to HIV prevention and
education.
The event has grown so large, organizers had to move from the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores to the Masonic Temple, due to an increase in both patrons and participating artists. The contributing artists, who are selected by a planning committee, range from high-profile, highly successful names to burgeoning artists just out of school. Just about everything imaginable is available: jewelry, ceramics, metal, oil paintings, mixed media, and 3-D art; the prices range from $50 to $6,000.
“The great thing about the event is it’s really perceived as one of the most serious art auctions in the community,” says Yvonne Greenhouse of MAPP. “It’s very respected, and really gives artists the opportunity to showcase their work.”
Artworks For Life takes place Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Masonic Temple, 500 Temple Ave., Detroit. A tour of the Masonic starts promptly at 5:30 p.m.; a silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m., and the live auction starts at 8:30 p.m. Both run until 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $85; for reservations, call Yvonne Greenhouse of MAPP at 248-545-1435 x104.
