Detroit is steps closer to bucking its movie theater desert status thanks to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
The Austin, Texas-based theater just announced its first Detroit location, which is slated to open in 2020, Crain’s reports. The 44,000-square-foot building will house nine screens, is projected to seat 900 patrons, and is planning to open near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Woodward Avenue.
Described by the company as “not your average multiplex,” Alamo is known for screening art house films alongside box-office blockbusters, as well as hosting unique film marathons like CAGED, a Nicolas Cage marathon. Another feature that sets Alamo apart is each locations' extensive craft beer selection and full food menu, all of which is delivered seat-side.
Currently, Detroit lacks many theaters that screen wide-releases. The Ren Cen 4, located inside of the Renaissance Center for nearly 30 years, closed in 2015. The art house theater Cinema Detroit located in Midtown and Eight Mile Road's Bel Air Luxury Cinema
