Sorry to bombard you with auto news, but News Hits is pleased to hear that the Big Three supports Ferndale’s Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center, in a big way. GM leads the pack with $40,000 pledged for the third year in a row; DaimlerChrysler follows with its third annual pledge of $30,000. Ford gave $25,000 last year; Affirmations is hoping for more this year.
Leslie Thompson, Affirmations executive director, says GM is “a really great company as far as diversity is concerned.” Each corporation pays gay-partner benefits and has gay employee groups, she says.
The donations are crucial to keep the center’s youth programs afloat. Affirmations provides crisis help, counseling and social activities for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth, works with about 75 teens weekly and places one runaway per month in a shelter. As you’ll read elsewhere in News Hits, the center’s ability to place male teens is in jeopardy.
