Adios, amigo

Damn. We’ve lost a good one. For more than seven years, staff writer Ann Mullen has been contributing hard-hitting news stories and compassion-filled features to this rag (not to mention her snidely funny items that appeared in this column each week). Guided by an ingrained sense of social justice and a healthy contempt for those who misuse power, she embodied the journalistic credo that instructs reporters to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. But, as of this week, she has left the building to try her hand at a new medium. Mullen has taken a job with Channel 7 news, where she’ll continue kicking ass as an investigative producer for WXYZ’s muckraking reporter, Steve Wilson.

Mullen will be much missed around this place. Over the years she’s developed into one of this city’s best reporters. That’s not only our extremely biased opinion. Just this year, she was one of four finalists in the Journalist of the Year competition held by the metro Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

But that’s only part of the story. Along with being an excellent reporter, Ann Mullen is one of the most truly decent people you could ever hope to meet, and we’ve been proud to consider her not just a co-worker, but a friend.

Our loss is 7’s great gain. Guess now we’ll have to start watching.
