A reporter’s legacy

Last month News Hits had the sad task of reporting that Deborah Kaplan, this paper’s news editor from 1989 to 1991, had died. At the time of her death, the 53-year-old reporter and author was an assistant journalism and communications professor at the University of Washington.

We received word last week that her family has endowed a memorial fund in her honor. The fund’s purpose is to “support narrative journalism and graduate student research on social issues, with a preference for field research.” This worthy cause is open to contributions, which are tax-deductible. Make checks payable to the University of Washington Foundation, an dnote in the memo section that it’s for the “Deborah Noel Kaplan Endowment Fund.” Send those checks to Victoria Strang, Development Director, Department of Communication, College of Arts & Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195.
