717 people have been shot and killed in Detroit since 2014

In the last five years, 717 people have been shot and killed in Detroit according to a new report by the independent nonprofit news organization The Trace.

The map created by The Trace illustrates the prevalence of gun violence throughout the country, excluding suicides committed with firearms (which amounts to more than 20,000 deaths per year nationally). The data — compiled by the Gun Violence Archive from Jan. 1, 2014 through Dec. 13, 2018 — shows that there have been 274,173 shootings nationwide, resulting in 70,825 deaths by gun violence.

Detroit accounts for at least 1,530 shootings since 2014, resulting in 717 deaths and 1,298 people injured by gun violence. The map, which denotes fatal shootings in red and nonfatal shootings in yellow, reveals shootings by year and sorts data by type, detailing incidents of accidental gun violence, mass shootings, and whether a child or officer was involved.


A closer view of the 2018 map below reveals that the number of fatal shootings in Detroit is evenly concentrated throughout the east and west side of Detroit, with fewer fatal incidents occurring along Woodward Ave., Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Southwest Detroit.


In Michigan alone, there have been at least 4,005 shootings in that period, resulting in 1,740 fatalities. Following Detroit, Flint and Saginaw ranked as Michigan's most deadly cities for gun violence with 179 and 62 deaths  respectively during the five year period. All but 14 shootings were isolated to the Lower Peninsula.


The interactive map also features a search option, allowing users to see the number of incidents since 2014 that have occurred within a one-mile radius of a specific address.
