An institution in Detroit hip hop is nearing an end.
Three Floors of Fun at
St. Andrew’s Hall has exposed masses of hip-hop fans to underground local and national artists every Friday night since the early 1980s. Unfortunately, the masses coming out to support the event have dwindled over the summer and the venue is partnering up with WRIF to host three floors of rock music, hoping the shift will boost attendance. Needless to say, disappointment describes the state of the hip-hop community at the moment, having lost a popular meeting place.
Habiba Adams, a regular of the club and CEO of Fatal Beauty Entertainment Marketing, says the event lost attendance numbers because of a lack of promotion. “There’s no reason why a hip-hop night shouldn’t be successful in downtown Detroit,” she says. “If two-thirds of the music on Billboard charts is hip hop, how is it that a rock night will be more profitable than a hip-hop night?” But with endings sprout new beginnings and folks in the scene are hard at work figuring out where to go from here.
DJ House Shoes, one of the original DJs from the Three Floors event, has a new gig spinning at
Tonic on Sundays. On Wednesdays,
Lush hosts
DJ Tony Tone. And the finale of Three Floors of Fun in its current incarnation is scheduled for Sept. 15, featuring DJ House Shoes. The following night, he joins
DJ Godfather and
Kid Capri for a show at St. Andrew’s (431 E. Congress, Detroit — 313-961-MELT) to bring the house down once again.
