- Airport law enforcement is permitted to search you and your belongings and to interview you without a warrant or suspicion of illegal activity at any time.
- If an officer searches and/or confiscates your laptop or cell phone, get a receipt for your property.
What Agents Can Ask
- If you are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (LPR), you cannot be denied entry into the U.S. for refusing to answer questions or to unlock your phone, laptop, or other electronics.
- If you are a visa holder, you may be denied entry into the U.S. for refusing to answer citizenship questions or to unlock your phone or laptop.
- If asked questions regarding your religion, political affiliation, sexuality, ethnicity, or nationality, you may choose to remain silent. Do not lie about anything!
Ask for a Lawyer
- You must assert your right to legal representation.
- Do not sign any papers without your lawyer present.
Keep Notes
- Write down what you can remember. These notes should include the location and the names of the agents involved. Keep notes of the interaction.
