One Republican rose above his party’s desperate and cheap tactics to discredit and smear President Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen during Wednesday’s House oversight committee.

Three hours into the partisan circus, Rep. Justin Amash, of Michigan, broke ranks with fellow Republicans to ask a meaningful question of Trump’s attorney and fixer of 10 years.

“What is the truth that you know President Trump fears the most?” Amash, who has been critical of Trump in the past, asked.

Cohen, seemingly surprised, shook his head and said it was a “tough question” he couldn’t answer.

Amash, a libertarian-leaning member of the conservative Freedom Caucus, also asked Cohen to elaborate on how Trump gives orders by dropping hints.

But Amash’s GOP colleagues, in their fervor to defend the president, showed no interest in learning more about hush money, WikiLeaks or Trump’s foreign business deals.

The Trump apologists resorted to petty, contemptuous attacks, portraying Cohen as a “fraudster,” “pathological liar” and “cheat.”

In an op-ed published in The New York Times, Peter Wehner, a former official under President Reagan and both Bush administrations, slammed Republicans over what he described as a “frantic effort to discredit” Cohen.

“Republicans on the committee tried to destroy the credibility of his testimony, not because they believe that his testimony is false, but because they fear it is true,” Wehner wrote.
