Mark Bessner, the former Michigan State Trooper charged with second degree murder in connection to a Detroit teenager's death, is being held on a $1 million cash bond after an arraignment hearing on Thursday, Dec. 21 at the 36th District Court in Detroit.
According to a press release from the Wayne County Prosecutor's office, Bessner was arraigned this morning before Magistrate Bari Blake Wood.

Wayne State law professor Peter Henning says that bail seems high.

"Usually bail is set to ensure the defendant does not flee before trial, which seems unlikely in this case although not impossible," Henning tells Metro Times. "Under the bail bond system, Mr. Bessner will have to post 10 percent with a bondsman — so $100,000 — to be released, and doesn’t get that money back. So it will be a challenge to make bail. This seems almost punitive, and I expect his attorney, Mr. Convertino, will ask the Circuit Court to review the bail."

Bessner is charged with second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. In August, Bessner fired a Taser gun at Damon Grimes during a police chase, causing the teenager to crash and die — a violation of MSP protocol.
