A new FM radio station — a rarity — plans to begin broadcasting from a studio at Ferndale’s Rust Belt Market by next summer.

100.7 WFCB, a low-power FM station, is kicking off a crowdfunding campaign at after successfully obtaining a license from the Federal Communications Commission. The station’s fundraising goal is $15,000, in order to finance equipment such as an antenna and transmitter, according to a Wednesday announcement.

Opportunities for new low-power FM licenses from the FCC are few and far between, with the federal agency’s 2013 application period being only the third to occur in two decades, according to Ferndale Radio organizers.

“We are thrilled to reveal the news about 100.7 Ferndale Radio and the potential impact it will make it in the community,” said Michelle Mirowski, president of the station.

Programming will trend toward indie rock, with some hip-hop and soul — and exposing listeners to Detroit artists is a priority, according to Ferndale Radio organizers.

The station’s future plans include expanded programming with volunteer DJs and hosts.

The project is five years in the making, said Jeremy Olstyn, Ferndale Radio’s programming and training director. “It’s been a labor of love, and reaching this point in the process is exciting. With the support of the community, a unique radio station offering an alternative option on the FM dial is just months away.”

The radio station is a “perfect fit,” said Rust Belt Market co-owner Chris Best.

“It was actually in our business plan to have a community radio station. We couldn’t be more excited to make this happen.”
