'Detroit Discusses Ferguson' offers forum for artists and activists

Posted By on Fri, Dec 5, 2014 at 8:51 AM

We received word that Mosaic Youth Theatre will present "Detroit Discusses Ferguson," a safe forum open to all to "discuss fears, frustrations, and other feelings regarding the recent verdict in Ferguson."

The night will begin with a reading by a variety of local Detroit actors of excerpts from Anna Deavere Smith's "Twilight: Los Angeles 1992" — originally performed as a one-woman play comprised of interviews from actual Los Angeles residents after the Rodney King riots. A group discussion will follow.

The event occurs at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Mosaic Youth Theatre, 2251 Antietam Ave., Detroit. More information available at the Mosaic Youth website.

With the more recent verdict in New York not to indict the officer who killed Eric Garner, another unarmed man, using a banned chokehold technique, police brutality has struck a nerve, igniting another wave of protests across the country. On Thursday, protesters staged a "die-in" at Campus Martius Park where they all dropped to the ground in unison to show solidarity with Garner.
