Build a bat house this weekend

Posted By on Fri, Oct 10, 2014 at 4:22 PM

American bats are in danger — due to the spreading of a disease called white-nose syndrome, which has reached Michigan this year, bats are have been dying at a rate of about a million every year. But as Rob Mies, founder and executive director of the Bloomfield Hills-based Organization for Bat Conservation recently told us, the flying mammals are highly beneficial, hunting pesky insects.

One thing that people can do to help bats is to build a bat house. In the video below, Mies explains how to build your own. Bat houses can house nursing colonies of 100 to 300 females and their offspring, depending on the size of the house. (Male bats, we're told, usually live alone or with a buddy — a "bat-chelor pad," if you will. Sorry.)

So here's a weekend project that's perfect for the Halloween season. Watch a step-by-step instructional video below, or check out the instructions on the Organization for Bat Conservation.
