The DSO has an event-packed October: Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Music Box opens with an eclectic program including the avant-garde sounds of eighth blackbird, the classic Beaux Arts Trio, and violinist Daniel Hope’s revival of the music of Ravi Shankar. Show time is 8 p.m.
In Orchestra Hall Oct. 15, Oscar Peterson, a prolific jazz pianist who’s played with Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie, to name just two, performs with storied saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Show time is 8 p.m.
Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 16-18, conductor Neeme Järvi and saxophonist/composer James Carter “raise the roof” with one of DSO’s signature jazz/symphony productions. Show times: Thursday, 8 p.m.; Friday, 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 18-19, the center is holding a free indoor music festival featuring multiple stages with music in every corner of The Max, including jazz, classical and contemporary musicians such as the Immigrant Suns, Sound Extraction X, Jeremy Kittel on the Celtic fiddle and folk singer Audra Kubat. Featured concerts in Orchestra Hall include the DSO youth orchestras, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and a free concert from the DSO. The Saturday program runs 10 a.m.-midnight. The Sunday program runs noon-8 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 23, the DSO holds a chamber music program featuring Grammy Award-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman, with Emmanuelle Boisvert on violin and Robert deMaine on cello. Show time is
7:30 p.m.
Friday-Sunday, Oct. 24-26, pianist Bronfman plays Richard Strauss with the symphony, Neeme Järvi conducting. Show times are Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 8:30 p.m.; Sunday at 3 p.m.
Oct. 30-Nov. 2, the DSO performs “Classics of the Silver Screen,” featuring “Tara’s Theme” from Gone With the Wind, “The James Bond Theme,” from the 007 movies, and classics from other films such as North by Northwest. Show times are Thursday, 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m.; Friday, 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 3 p.m.
