If you’ve never sent your ex a link to “Hospital” by proto-punks the Modern Lovers, did you even really break up?
Having released just one album, the Modern Lovers carved a strange and compelling nook in rock ’n’ roll history with the conversational, child-like darkness with which frontman Jonathan Richman mused over love, life, and the American landscape. (Plus, it’s considered by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 best records of all time.) A goddamn unsung rock god and national treasure, Richman took a break after the band called it quits in 1974, going on to release over 17 solo records, including several Spanish translations of his previous work. Richman will be joined by drummer Tommy Larkins.
Jonathan Richman will perform with drummer Tommy Larkins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 at Third Man Records; 441 W. Canfield St., Detroit; 313-209-5205;
