The Raconteurs — Jack White’s
The band — which also features Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler — has previously shared “Sunday Driver” and “Now That You’re Gone.” Those appear on Help Us Stranger, along with a cover of Donovan's “Hey Gyp (Dig The Slowness).”
According to TMR, the album was recorded at Third Man Studio and mixed at Blackbird Studios, both located in Nashville. The new record features contributions from Dean Fertita (who is in White's other-other band, the Dead Weather) and Lillie Mae Rische, who has appeared on White's solo records and tour.
A limited edition color vinyl version of the record is featured in the next Third Man Vault subscription series; more information including the full track list is available at Third Man.
The record reportedly gives a new meaning to "garage rock." According to an Instagram post last month, White developed a novel mixing technique that involves broadcasting the songs from the studio on an unused FM frequency so he and the band can listen to the songs in his Tesla Model S. He then uses a walkie talkie to give listening notes back to the studio, offering feedback in real time.
According to the Instagram caption, "This speeds up the process of mixing greatly and reduces the amount of remixes that occur after artists feel they’ve 'got it' in the studio, only to listen in the car on the ride home realizing that the kickdrum is too loud!"
In other White news, the "Do Whaters" — a Detroit-sourced band White put together to record Van Lear Rose, his 2004 album with country music vet Loretta Lynn — reportedly reunited on Monday for a one-off performance as part of an all-star birthday bash for Lynn, who turns 87 later this month. The band performed the song "Portland, Oregon" with Third Man artist Margo Price duetting with White.
