Sunday fundraiser to help P-Funk's Belita Woods

May 11, 2011 at 2:17 pm
Those who were there in the day, and serious students of R&B of yore, know the name and work of Belita Woods going back to her ’60s sides for Ollie McLaughlin’s Moira label and ’70s work with the group Brainstorm (she had the lead vocals on “Loving is Really My Game” and “This Must Be Heaven”). No doubt, more have seen and heard her as a vocalist with George Clinton’s P-Funk aggregations from the 1990s up until recently.

Now her friends are rallying to pay for her medical bills in the wake of a massive heart attack on April 10, 2011. She had to undergo emergency open heart surgery, Shannon Durant wrote us in an e-mail on behalf of the event organizers.

The lineup promises an incredible procession of Detroit’s R&B community (and fellow travelers), including Misty Love, U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr., various P-Funkers, the Contours featuring Joe Billingslea, original Vandellas, Brainstorm, Carl Carlton, Syder Turner, Robert Lowe, Maruga, the Sun Messengers, Cash McCall, Lenny Lake and more.

It all  happens Sunday, May 15, from 7-12 at Bert’s Warehouse, 2739 Russell Street, 313-567-2030.
