Show Preview: Detain, Breaking Wheel, Sons of Southern Darkness and more @ The Sanctuary, November 28th 2015
The straight edge movement has always held a contentious place in the canon of punk rock history. But at the Sanctuary, which regularly hosts shows by Michigan straight edge acts like True Love and Freedom, regulars seem to have only picked up the important stuff about self-awareness, self-respect, and most crucially, self-organization.
The Sanctuary is a not for profit space on East Outer Drive, which serves as a showcase not just for hardcore, punk and metal, but some of the most diverse, interesting and experimental music in Michigan. They also put on a range of different events including art exhibitions, charity fundraisers, and even stand up comedy.
So beloved is the Sanctuary to music fans in Michigan and beyond, that when the space was burglarized and suffered extensive damage earlier this year, its community came together to far exceed the initial fundraising target. But running a project like the Sanctuary is a constant struggle of finances, and so this weekend they will be hosting a benefit to buy the building air conditioning for the summer.
The bands performing Saturday include Michigan hardcore acts like Detain and Breaking Wheel, as well as some slightly more experimental, shoegazey rock like Threading (who were
written up in Noisey earlier this year), Punk rock trio Outside, Grand Rapids death metal Souls Denied, and Sons of Southern Darkness complete the line up.
