Pennsylvania singer Avery Sunshine’s The Sun Room is definitely an R&B album rooted in the here and now, but she’s not afraid to throw a few glances backwards too. She has a strong voice with an impressive range but, like Detroit girls Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, she makes sure that every note that comes out of her mouth is honest, that she means it. There are a few nods to 1970s disco and 1980s pop here too, and a big helping of 1990s girl-group R&B. The harmonies and the big choruses are there, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
