After a bit of a hiatus, the popular disco-infused DJ night Macho City will return on Saturday, Nov. 29. Even better news — it's returning as a monthly party. To ring in its triumphant return, we tracked down Macho City DJs Mike Trombley, Scott Zacharias, and new addition Jeffrey Sfire to share their favorite tracks.
Free Life — "Dance Fantasy"
This one really needs to be felt at full volume to get the full picture. Wonderfully produced by Earth Wind & Fire's Philip Bailey with just the right amount of rock 'n' roll corniness to take it way over the top. Check your ego and get truly "lost."
Zinc — "Street Level"
This one is always in the bag. A ragtag production outfit of Italians took to the streets of New York and got none other than Kashif to write the title cut. The entire LP is a master class in funk.
Loose Joint — "Is It All Over My Face"
Written and produced by avant garde cellist Arthur Russell and remixed by Paradise Garage maestro Larry Levan, this one gets major play at Macho City. Recorded live with an earthy, almost random feel. A record that proves how disco could be just as subversive and DIY as punk.
Gino Soccio — "Remember"
There's a special place in our collective heart for Gino Soccio, the French-Canadian Giorgio Moroder. So many great tracks, shimmering production, and arpeggiated synth bass-lines. "Remember" is a favorite. That chorus!
Bam Bam — "Give It to Me"
My favorite memory of this song is playing it in San Francisco for one of the first Patrick Cowley parties Honey Sound System did. I played it, and Detroit native Marke Bieschke ran up and cheered. I was like ... serve.
