Here's a selective list of what we think are the best afterparties (of more than 50 scheduled) off the festival grounds. Sure, we've probably missed some good ones, but who cares?

Masters of the House: A Tribute to Ken Collier
Featuring Delano Smith, Charles Hicks, Al Ester, Norm Talley, Minx, Mike Clark, Pirahnahead, Genesis
When rock-funk band Was (Not Was) played in Detroit earlier this month, Don Fagenson (nee: Don Was) verbally paid tribute to Ken Collier, a DJ and producer who joined with both local and national DJ-musicians to shepherd disco mixing out of gay clubs into the global dance mainstream more than 25 years ago. Collier also helped remix early Was (Not Was) tracks.
Friday night's "Masters of House" makes good on an urge that's lasted more than a decade (Collier died in 1996) to commemorate Collier's memory and legacy; the latter has continued long after Heaven, the club at Seven Mile Road and Woodward Avenue where he held his longest residence, sadly became a McDonald's. Hosted and DJ'd by those who knew and adored him, the party features artists who understand a key component to what made DJs like Collier so important: The ethical relationship between DJ and dancer. Don't wait until Sunday to attend church.

Last year, only a month after the closing of New York City's last indoor, wooden-floored skating rink, musician and DJ Kenny Dixon Jr. invited Movement festival fans to join him at Northland Skating Arena for a night of "Grown-folks people skating to grown-folks music." Last year, the event brought more than 1,000 people together for an international, polyracial, multigenerational party that put smiles on faces and permanent dents in a few behinds.
Known as Moodymann on his eclectically funky dance records for his label Mahogani Music, Dixon Jr. has normally promoted his Afro instead of his face — the shape of his hair forms the logo for many of his records and he regularly performs behind a screen that only shows his head's shadow. Although this has led to a dearth of serious writing on the artist, it has not led to dance floor obscurity: Dixon's records have become staples in the global dance underground.
