If you’re not hip to the genre “neo-soul,” first of all, shame on you. Secondly, let Chicago-based singer-songwriter Ravyn Lenae show you how it’s done. At just 19 years old, Lenae has been described as a cross between Azealia Banks, Erykah Badu, and Kelis, and has toured with SZA. Needless to say, she’s having a major moment. She cites a diverse number of artists as influences, including Stereolab, Outkast, Bob Marley, and Ella Fitzgerald. On her latest EP, this year's Crush, Lenae explores a brand of melancholy perhaps best suited for solo laps around the roller rink — you know, smooth and deceptively sad.
Ravyn Lenae will perform on Monday, April 9 at El Club; Doors open at 8 p.m.; 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-279-7382; elclubdetroit.com; Tickets are $20-$25.
