For two decades, Jim James led My Morning Jacket — a once-obscure band from Kentucky-turned-polarizing Grammy Award nominees and Beach Boys incarnates.

Since leaving My Morning Jacket (a band that is inarguably a divisive pick in the halls of great alternative rock bands of the aughts) with 2015’s The Waterfall, James has gone on to make some dreamy and haunting solo soundscapes, including last year’s companion records Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity, which find the 41-year-old caught between effects pedals and guitar shredding and acoustic sparseness.

Jim James will perform at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, at Royal Oak Music Theatre; 318 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak; 248-399-2980; royaloakmusictheatre.com. Tickets are $40+.
